Architecture started because of the needs of the people, such as shelter, security, religion, etc... Some of the first civilizations to frequently practice architecture were the Egyptians, Mesopotamians, and Indians. Architecture was used for all things that were very important. For example, the Military. Militant architects would work on building weapons for attacking, and on defensive structures as well, such as high walls and fortresses. Architecture was also used for entertainment back then or to show-off a country's power. Architecture is still of great importance to this day. Some old Architectural work is now viewed for tourist attractions, such as The Great Wall of China. The first civilizations to modernize and improve Architecture were the Greeks and the Romans. Their work influenced the field of architecture. They made many memorable structures such as the Colosseum and the Temple of Hesphaistos, which are inspirations to the modern form of Architecture we use today. The earliest written work of architecture is by a famous Roman architect named Virtuvius. According to Virtuvius, a building should satisfy 3 principals: Durability, Utility, and Beauty.
